What do our builders want?
From my standpoint, they want faster more accurate deliverables. They want their drawings more complete, and they want their steel delivered on time and correctly detailed.
That was the motivation behind opening Star’s new satellite drafting office in Salem, Illinois. Builders want a faster turnaround and we wanted to make that happen.
In downtown Salem, just a block from the courthouse square, we’ve created a 14-person drafting department with space to grow as the market requires. This project was implemented in September 2014, one of my first orders of business when I accepted the role of Director of Drafting.
Here in Oklahoma City, the job market had grown so rapidly, largely due to the oil and gas market, that it had become more difficult to find and retain draftsmen. In order to meet the sales forecast for 2015, our drafting capabilities needed to grow.
Salem offers that opportunity.
Our new satellite office is positioned near Kaskaskia College and Rend Lake College, two Illinois schools with exceptional drafting programs. Working with these schools in a recruiting effort, we are striving to meet the current and coming market demand.
What does that mean for our builders?
The satellite office has increased our drafting capacity and with that greater capability will improve our service levels and turn around the drawings in a shorter time period and ultimately provide faster more accurate deliverables.
